Blessings in a Backpack is a non-profit organization that feeds school children who currently are fed during the week on the federally funded Free and Reduced Meal Program and are at risk of going hungry on the weekends. Volunteers donate food items and pack the bags, which are then distributed to relevant schools and put in the backpacks of qualifying children.
Blessings in a Backpack also tries to include new books so that the reading retention rates of these children do not decrease during the school breaks.
Rotary Club of North Fulton purchased 50 newly-released books to go home with some of these children over their winter break.
